Kimmery Martin has an obvious skill for writing about people and the honesty in the ways they function. So often in works of fiction, characters are made to be too perfectly good or perfectly bad, when in reality we are all a blend of different actions, choices, and morals. She manages to outline most of her characters in this way, although of course her focus is on Zadie and Emma, and it.
Kimmery Martin brings out such beautiful emotion and a reality call of what friendship and forgiveness, love and betrayal is all about in her debut novel, The Queen of Hearts. “One moment someone you know was whole, and the next he could be stilled and buried.” The details from the breathing tubes to downtown Charlotte was so unbelievably written that you might as well have been there in.

Kimmery Martin has written a beautiful book that is a perfect amalgamation of her two loves: medicine and literature. Her extensive medical knowledge shines through and I loved reading the details of medical life and procedures and cracking up at some of the anecdotes of life as a doctor and mother. The Queen of Hearts is expertly written and I can’t wait to read the author’s second book.
